I went back over the burn on Friday afternoon (we had burned the previous Saturday morning). Pictures of the burn and the follow up are posted under "Gallery", and "Members Gallery".

It is easy to see which leaves on trees and shrubs were killed, and which shrubs look like they were killed back to the root. Most of the yaupon that was killed back will sprout back at the base in a year or two. Still, the pasture is much more open after the burn. Many of the young trees and bushes that sprouted since the pasture was burned last were consumed, so this pasture will remain open enough for quail and will not turn back into woody wasteland that has no food for wildlife.

The burn in the woods was more successful than we realized when it was taking place. Because the flames were low and the fire was not dramatic, we thought it had not killed much undergrowth. After only one week it was plane we killed more cedar that we originally thought. It will be interesting to see the difference this summer between the burned place and the rest of the post oak woods.

Based on the way the woods burned, I am planning to try to have more burns in the woods in the future, for sure.
