This grassland restoration project in Fayette County, initiated in October 2021, began as a Johnson grass and KR Bluestem hay pasture. This project included one cover crop and three herbicide applications before planting native grasses and forbs. The middle picture depicts the summer cover crop used during the project. WHF enrolled the landowner in TPWD’s Pastures for Upland Birds program and helped facilitate the entire project. This program provided the herbicide for two of the applications and the native grass mix at no cost. The native grass seed was planted in September of 2022, which allowed for all of the wildflowers to grow first and produce amazing colors for the first growing season. If you or someone you know is interested in restoring property to native grassland, reach out to us, and we can help make it a reality!
