As our flagship project, WHF established the first-ever quail corridor. This corridor stretched for seven miles, from our home base to the Attwater Prairie Chicken Reserve. We knew if we could bring the quail back, other native species would follow. Ornithologists later found 31 species of upland birds in the corridor, including Bobwhite Quail.
Coastal Prairie restoration requires constant yearly management. This burn was one of a series of burns in a checkerboard fashion on approximately 1/3 of the entire restored habitat. Burning in this fashion ensures wildlife habitat, plant health (reduces thatch), provides higher quality forage for livestock and aids in reducing ever-present brush encroachment.
