No-till Drill as a Valuable Tool

Plant the seed, not a disturbance. 🌱

When establishing or improving forage, sometimes the best thing we can do for the soil is disturb it as little as possible. A no-till drill allows seed to be placed directly into the soil while leaving most of the existing vegetation, plant residue, and soil structure intact.

Why does that matter? Excessive tillage can break down soil structure, expose soil to wind and water erosion, reduce organic matter, and disrupt the soil organisms working beneath our feet. NRCS identifies minimizing soil disturbance as one of the fundamental principles of building healthy soil. Reduced and no-till systems can also help maintain surface residue, conserve soil moisture, improve water infiltration over time, and reduce runoff and erosion.

For grazing lands, a no-till drill can be a valuable tool when introducing native grasses, forbs, legumes, or seasonal forage species into an existing system without completely turning over the soil. Disc-type no-till drills are designed to cut through existing residue, open a narrow seed slot, place the seed, and close the soil back around it—creating good seed-to-soil contact with relatively little disturbance.
