Big Four Grasses of Texas
0 Comment
Before fences, roads, and cultivated fields, Texas prairies were dominated by four native grasses: Little Bluestem, Big Bluestem, Switchgrass, and Indiangrass. These foundational species helped build healthy soils, support wildlife, improve water infiltration, and sustain the vast grasslands that once covered much of the state.
Today, Wildlife Habitat Federation works alongside landowners to conserve and restore these native plant communities through grazing management, habitat restoration, and conservation planning. Protecting these grasses means protecting the health, productivity, and resilience of Texas landscapes for generations to come.
